Prescription drug use can affect all ages throughout the lifespan. Prescription drug abuse takes on different forms and can be identified by common drug seeking behaviors, from taking a medication more often than prescribed, asking for or stealing medication from family or friends to alleviate pain, to snorting or injecting and unprescribed pain medication to overmedicate.
Signs and symptoms of drug use:
- taking higher doses than recommended
- hostility
- appearing to be unusually lethargic or energetic
- changes in sleep or eating patterns
- an increase of alcohol consumption
- mood swings
- irritability
- lying about medication use
- stashing medication around the house
- ordering prescriptions from internet pharmacies
- stealing or forging prescriptions
- doctor shopping
- using prescriptions faster than prescribed
- crushing or breaking pills.
Signs and symptoms of anti-anxiety agents/sedative abuse:
- drowsiness and excessive sleepiness
- unsteady gait
- involuntary rapid eye movements
- dizziness, confusion, appearing intoxicated
- involuntary ticks or movements
- poor memory, poor judgement
- lowered inhibitions
- slurred speech
- poor concentration
- blackouts
- slowed breathing
Common signs and symptoms of stimulant use:
- weight loss
- appetite suppression
- decreased need for sleep
- irritability, agitation
- cardiac arrhythmias, irregular heart rate
- impulsivity, reckless behaviors and restlessness
- paranoia
- elevated body temperature
Common signs and symptoms of painkiller abuse:
- depression
- sweating
- confusion
- hypotension, decreased respiratory rate
- impaired coordination and judgement
- increased risk-taking behaviors
- constipation
- worsening or increased sensitivity to pain with higher doses of medication.

This place is AMAZING! If you are seeking complete rehabilitation with strong aftercare, look no further. The staff is caring and always there to help. The education, facilities, and food are all phenomenal. The counselors are genuine and truly want to get to the core of your addiction, not just detox you and send you on your way. I stayed for an additional month, a total of 4, and they worked with me on the financial piece since insurance coverage had ended. It was completely worth the cost and I couldn’t be more grateful. While I hope to never relapse, if I do, I will be back there in a heartbeat.
I was at Touchstone a few years ago. I am from NC and it was SO worth the plane ticket. I can’t thank Debbie enough for what she did for me. She had an awesome staff. Her counselors were amazing, the nurses were wonderful, and the food was much better than you get at home!! When you are away from family you want to be around people who care for you. You also want a great place to be comfortable and sleep well!! Debbie cares about you being comfortable and she makes sure the little things and the big things are taken care of!!!
